Common questions

What is the difference between Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus?
Cyber Essentials is a verified self-assessment where you answer questions about your firewalls, configuration, access control, malware protection and patching. Cyber Essentials Plus checks the same five controls but adds a hands-on technical audit by an assessor, who tests a sample of your devices to confirm the controls are really in place. Plus carries more weight with clients and some contracts require it specifically.
We already have antivirus. Why do we need EDR as well?
Traditional antivirus matches known threats against a list, which misses anything new or disguised. EDR (endpoint detection and response) watches how software behaves, so it can spot ransomware encrypting files or an account doing something it never normally does, then isolate the device before the problem spreads. It also records what happened, which matters when you need to show an insurer or client how an incident was contained.
How long does it take to get Cyber Essentials certified?
If your systems are already in good shape, the self-assessment can be completed and submitted within a couple of weeks. Where there are gaps, such as missing MFA, unsupported software or inconsistent patching, the timeline depends on how much remediation is needed, and we will give you a clear list and a realistic date after a short review. We handle the questionnaire and the assessor relationship for you.
